Carrick and Smalling start

England boss Roy Hodgson handed Manchester United duo Michael Carrick and Chris Smalling recalls for the crucial World Cup qualifier against Poland at Wembley.

With Kyle Walker suspended, Hodgson was forced to make one change from the side that defeated Montenegro on Friday.

Smalling got the nod ahead of Red Devils team-mate Phil Jones to make his first appearance since the draw in Montenegro last March.

Carrick was the biggest call though as Frank Lampard lost his place.

The midfielder has been used sparingly since confirming his international return immediately after Euro 2012.

However, Hodgson felt the 32-year-old's ability to retain possession could be vital to his side's chances of getting the win needed to secure a place at next summer's Finals in Brazil.

The remainder of the England line-up was the same, which meant a second cap for Andros Townsend, who was so impressive on Friday.
