Capello: Door open for Owen
09 Aug 2009 - 11:12:24
Fabio Capello insists the international door remains open for Michael Owen despite leaving the striker out of his England squad for next week's friendly against the Netherlands.
Owen was hoping to earn a recall to the international fold following his switch from Newcastle to Manchester United during the summer.
However, the 89-times capped striker has yet to make a competitive appearance for the Red Devils and so Capello does not feel the time is right to recall him.
But despite opting to select the likes of Emile Heskey, Carlton Cole, Jermain Defoe and club-mate Wayne Rooney ahead of him, Capello has reassured Owen that he still has an England future.
"I think it is a fantastic chance for Owen to play another time with a really important team and in the Champions League," said the Italian.
"It is another chance and that is really important for the player. The door is open.
"He has to play well and score goals. He has to get back to what he was before last season.
"I want to keep the spirit of the group, to stay together, to prepare for the next really important game against Croatia.
"It's very important to play well and I will choose the best."
