Fabio Capello has still to decide whether to reinstate injury-hit Rio Ferdinand as England captain even if he is fit for the Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro at Wembley on October 12.
Ferdinand has already lost the Manchester United captaincy to Nemanja Vidic after a series of setbacks have curtailed his appearances for the Red Devils and he must now wait to find out whether Steven Gerrard will retain the armband for England.
"I haven't decided," Capello said. "I can't speak about who will be captain. I hope all the players will be fit and then I will announce it."
He added: "Why not Ferdinand? No, no no. Wait. I can't speak about if, if, if..."
Ferdinand was named as John Terry's replacement earlier this year but he suffered a knee problem which forced his withdrawal from the World Cup before England launched their ill-fated campaign.
Regarding the change of skipper at Old Trafford, Capello said: "I think Sir Alex decided on one player that played more games (Vidic) and be sure he is always fit. I think so.
"It is important always that the players have to be fit for a lot of games."
Meanwhile, Aston Villa forward Emile Heskey has rejected the chance to come out of international retirement to solve England's striker crisis.
Capello watched the targetman score the winner with a superb header against Wolves at Molineux on Sunday and he stated his intention to speak with Heskey ahead of Monday's squad announcement, but the former Liverpool player has informed Capello's lieutenant Franco Baldini of his intention to stick with his original decision.
"We will try to speak with Heskey," Capello said We need him at this moment. He is in good form."
