Capello wants youngsters playing

England manager Fabio Capello and Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA's director of football development, have both stressed the importance of rising domestic talent being given a regular chance to shine in the Barclays Premier League.

Capello and Brooking both know how vital it is that youngsters get the necessary exposure to top-flight football, be it with their parent clubs or out on loan, citing the examples of Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck - both of whom were named in Capello's latest England squad after going out on loan last season.

"Absolutely they need to play in the Premier League, this is important," Capello said on Sky Sports' Goals on Sunday programme. "They need to play, maybe on loan. It's very important for these young players to play."

He added: "(Chris) Smalling playing with Man United now has improved a lot and is a very interesting player. Welbeck, he played on loan last year. Now he's ready to play with Man United. Young players, good players, they need to play, on loan or with their team."

Speaking on the same programme, Brooking said: "I honestly believe, as I saw in that English Under-17 team 18 months ago, we have got a little group coming through in the 16/17 age group who I think could help change us from a senior point of view in the next few years, but we don't know if they are going to play in the first team, and that's key.

"We need something like 50-55%, at least, playing regularly in the Premier League, they should be there on merit.

"At the moment for somebody like Fabio as the senior coach to only have 35% is tough and no other country has as small a percentage as that."
