Capello: Door is still open to Owen

Fabio Capello has insisted he will never turn his back on Michael Owen, despite overlooking him for England's crunch clash with Ukraine. The Newcastle striker's recent injury problems meant he was snubbed for Wednesday night's World Cup qualifier against Ukraine, even though the loss of Darren Bent means Capello is without three senior strikers for the Group Six clash. On Saturday, the England coach seemed to rule Owen out altogether, stating he was playing Ukraine, not history, when asked whether the forward's 40 goals for England counted for anything when it came to team selection. However, Capello has now claimed such an interpretation was incorrect and although he made it plain that he preferred to talk about the players he did have at his disposal, Capello stated he would never abandon anyone in the England. "I know about the debate with Owen but I am focused on tomorrow's game, not players who are not here," he said."But if you look back, in every interview I have done, I have always said the door is open to every player. The same is true for him."
