Bruce: Bent should go to World Cup

Steve Bruce, the Sunderland manager, believes Darren Bent should be part of the 23-man England squad for the World Cup finals. Bent, 26, was named in the 30-man provisional squad named by coach Favio Capello on Tuesday, but his place on the plane to South Africa is far from secure with Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey and Wayne Rooney also included. One is likely to be left out of the final squad. Bruce spent £10million taking Bent to the Stadium of Light from Tottenham Hotspur last summer, and believes his form since the move to the north-east means he deserves to go to the finals. "The call-up is Darren's reward for an excellent first season for us. He has all the attributes needed to make a big impact on the international stage," he told Sunderland's official website. "Darren's finishing ability is exceptional, and that's a key asset when you are playing on a big stage like the World Cup. "Hopefully he can impress Mr Capello and earn a place in the full squad. We are all rooting for him."
