Sir Trevor Brooking is confident there will be no shortage of top class English candidates to replace Fabio Capello when he eventually leaves his post as England boss.
Despite speculation that he might be lured to Inter Milan as replacement for Rafael Benitez if, as expected, the former Liverpool coach finds his services are no longer required at the San Siro, the Football Association are confident Capello will see out his £6million annual contract. But once that expires, immediately after Euro 2012, the feeling within the FA hierarchy is that a domestic appointment should be made.
"There are some really talented coaches," observed the FA's director of football development.
And, while it might only be three years since there was no obvious English contender to succeed the sacked Steve McClaren, Brooking feels the landscape has changed dramatically.
He added: "There was a frustration in the past because the bigger clubs tended to go overseas. They bought a lot of overseas talent and thought an overseas coach would communicate better.
"That is wrong because it is almost like saying English coaches do not know the best overseas talent.
"Others said you had to be a former international or you had to have coached in the Champions League.
"English coaches were not getting the chance to prove whether they could do it or not.
"We had the experience with Steve. At some stage we want to go with it again."
