British involvement in 2018 World Cup final guaranteed thanks to hybrid pitch

England and Scotland will renew hostilities on Friday as they bid to reach the World Cup, but British involvement is already guaranteed in the final.

Russian organisers turned to British company SIS Pitches to install the pitch at Moscow's cavernous Luzhniki Stadium.

The 81,000-capacity venue was rebuilt after the 2013 World Athletics Championships, with the new pitch completed for handover earlier this month.

The 2018 final will be the first played on anything but 100 per cent natural turf, with the SISGrass hybrid grass system put in along with an under-pitch pipe system called SISAir.

The Luzhniki pitch will be put to the test at next year's Confederations Cup as preparations for the World Cup continue.

How many of the Home Nations will be in Russia for the finals could well become clearer at Wembley this Friday.
