Bent relief at first England goal
Darren Bent was relieved to score his first England goal in Tuesday night's win over Switzerland - especially after seeing a chance go begging moments earlier when Shaun Wright-Phillips misjudged a cross. Bent came off the bench as a second-half replacement for Jermaine Defoe, and scored the third goal to calm nerves in the 3-1 win in Basle. The Sunderland man should have had a goalscoring opportunity just before when he and Wright-Phillips led a counter-attack, but the Manchester City winger's cross was poor. "Me and Wrighty broke and when he went to square it didn't quire reach me, so I wondered if I would get another chance," said Bent. "Luckily enough Ashley Cole gave me a nice assist and I managed to put it away. I've had a few chances in previous games to get goals, I just put my foot through it and it went in. "It was disappointing not to go to the World Cup, but you've got to keep your head down, work hard for your club and put in good performances for them. do that and you won't be too far away."
