Beckham could make England squad - McManaman

Former England winger Steve McManaman believes that Tottenham target David Beckham has what it takes to break back into England fold.

Beckham is wanted by a number of Premier League clubs on a short-term loan before he starts the Major League Soccer season with the Los Angeles Galaxy in March.

"If he comes to England and he performs fantastically well and he influences games like he can do, I think it'll only be a positive," he said. "We'll wait and see whether he does come and ply his trade back in the Premier League."

The 35-year-old has had two similar spells with AC Milan in recent years in a bid to keep himself in the mind of England boss Fabio Capello.

That did not work out last year, though, with an Achilles injury suffered while playing for Milan ruling him out of the World Cup and seemingly ending his international career after Capello indicated he was looking to move forward with younger players.

McManaman does have his doubts as to whether or not the move will actually come to fruition.

He added: "I think (Tottenham manager) Harry Redknapp said exactly the right thing. It's a loan deal within a loan deal, which is the problem for a lot of Premier League clubs.

"I think teams who are struggling now or teams who want him, they can't have him until the end of the season, which is a pity.

"They can only have him for an eight-week loan deal, and that's the sticking point. That's going to be difficult to overcome. I know certain clubs would do that but I think with the bigger clubs, it's going to be hard for them.

"I think David wanted to get his fitness levels up, certainly, after his injury - which was a terrible injury - last year, and he needs to play as much as possible. If he can do that, great. Whether anybody will take a punt on him, I think is another thing."
