Arteta open to Three Lions

Mikel Arteta, Everton's Spanish midfielder, has said he would consider playing for England if approached. Arteta, 28, is eligible to represent the Three Lions having spent five years at Goodison Park. He has not represented his country at senior level. "If one day the opportunity comes obviously I would have to consider it very seriously," he told BBC Sport. "I don't know what his [England coach Fabio Capello's] thoughts are. I know some people have been talking about it, but I haven't said anything yet because the offer is not there at the moment." Almunia, Arsenal's Spanish goalkeeper, is also eligible for the Three Lions. A call-up has been suggested due to past concerns over English keepers but now appears unlikely, not least because of the emergence of Joe Hart as England's first-choice and questions over Almunia's future as No.1 at the Emirates Stadium. England have capped players born outside the country, most famously John Barnes who was born in the Jamaican capital Kingston.
