Andros Townsend owns Paul Merson on Twitter

Andros Townsend well and truly stuck it to Paul Merson after scoring the goal that rescued a draw in England’s friendly against Italy.

Former Arsenal star Merson was highly critical of Townsend’s inclusion in the England squad, but the Tottenham winger made his point on the pitch in the 1-1 draw in Turin – then made it off the pitch as well.

Merson thought Townsend’s form for Tottenham wasn’t good enough for him to picked for England, particularly in Spurs’ 3-0 loss to Manchester United.

He wrote in his column on the Sky Sports website: “If Andros Townsend can get in then it opens it up for anybody. We are not picking players who are playing well for their clubs – he got taken off after 30 minutes the other week against United.

“The England manager is there watching the game and he still gets picked. Townsend and Kyle Walker were the worst two players on the pitch.

“How can you tell me that a manager goes and watches Man United against Tottenham, the winger gets taken off after 30 minutes, the winger from the other team absolutely rinses the full-back for England and Ashley Young doesn’t get in the squad?”

Question duly answered.
