Ancelotti: Cole wanted too much money

Carlo Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager, has said Joe Cole was released this summer because of his wage demands. Cole, 28, is searching for a new club after seven years at Stamford Bridge. He was a bit-part player last season but was believed to be asking for a salary to match the club's top earners. John Terry, the Blues captain, criticised the decision to let Cole - who was part of England's World Cup squad - go but Ancelotti put the blame fully on Cole's desire for more money. "The problem was economic. It was a problem between the club and Joe Cole, not me. We spoke about this but when the problem is with money, it is not my problem," he said. "It is difficult to keep a player all the time in one squad. I think Joe Cole, like Michael Ballack and Julian Belletti, did a fantastic job. I want to thank them but now is the time to change."
