Alan Pardew thinks the England job should be a tournament-by-tournament one

Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew cannot hide his ambition to manage England but believes the national job should be handed out on a tournament-by-tournament basis.

Pardew is the favourite to replace Roy Hodgson whenever he moves on, with the current incumbent's contract running to the end of next summer's European Championships.

Fifty-four-year-old Pardew says he has specific views on the job and one of those is that tournament failure should mean you are moved on - a rule he also applies to Hodgson.

Speaking to The Times, he said: "I don't know about 'the favourite' but it's a job I have specific views on. To give yourself the best chance the manager should be (appointed) tournament by tournament. You're not building anything, you're picking an instant best team to win a championship.

"How long have you got to work with them? Three training days every three months? Come on! If you're going to have one of the biggest jobs in the world, which England manager is, you take it for one tournament. If you don't succeed, it's over.

"I might be misguided but if Roy doesn't do well at the Euros, they should move him on, give it to somebody and say: 'Here's your tournament, win it'."
