Agbonlahor: Withdrawal no issue

Gabriel Agbonlahor insists England had no issue with him withdrawing from the squad to face Denmark for family matters.

The 24-year-old player is also hoping Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier will restore him into his preferred central striking slot rather than using him in a wide role.

Speaking to Press Association Sport, Agbonlahor said: "There are a few family matters I had to deal with, but I was disappointed not to go (to Denmark). I spoke to them and they are fine with it so I look forward to future squads."

He added: "Of course, I love playing for my country and I think if you ask any of the players who have had to pull out it is not the sort of thing you want to do.

"But unfortunately these things do happen, you just have to get on with it and report to the next squad.

"Whether it is injuries or in my case family reasons, you have to pull out now and then.

"Obviously everyone knows I want to play in that position where Darren (Bent) is at the moment.

"This season is all about getting results. It has been a tough season so there will not be any moaning and I'll just get on with it.

"You never know with injuries cropping up. We needed that sort of back-up when we had a lot of injuries and people had to play different positions then.

"I think it is good that we are starting to get a bigger squad which we have not had for a few seasons, so I think we are looking good at the moment."
