Chalobah sets out to right wrongs

England Under-21s' clash with Italy not only offers a place in the European Championship semi-finals, but the opportunity for Jack Butland, Nathan Redmond and Nathaniel Chalobah to exorcise some demons.

The Young Lions lie second in Group B after recovering from an opening-day defeat to Portugal by sneaking past Sweden 1-0 on Sunday.

As a result, Gareth Southgate's men will progress to the semi-finals should they win Wednesday's final group match against Italy - an encounter which brings back unpleasant memories for three members of the squad.

Butland, Redmond and Chalobah all featured for the Under-21s when the Azzurrini triumphed 1-0 in the opening match of Euro 2013, putting them on course for a miserable tournament in which they returned home without so much as a point.

"It was my first time getting called up to the squad and it was obviously our opening game of the tournament," Chelsea midfielder Chalobah said. "It was disappointing that we lost that game but it always hurts losing.

"Definitely (it helps to motivate me)," he continued. "I mean the last time we played against Italy they weren't really good memories for me and the lads.

"But we didn't play as well as we could have last time round and that is something we're looking to put right this time."

England certainly look well placed to do that against the side bottom of the group, although Italy could have easily turned the goalless draw with Portugal into a win after recovering impressively from defeat to Sweden.

Chalobah is well aware of that improvement and makes this the biggest game of his Under-21s career.

"I'd definitely say so because it's a game that could potentially take us into the last four of the tournament," the 20-year-old said.

"I think that for us it is more about going into the game and not trying to put too much pressure on ourselves, but making sure that we perform and get the result we need."
