Cottbus squad splash the cash

The players of Bundesliga strugglers Energie Cottbus have promised to cover the expenses of the fans who travelled to Schalke on Friday evening.

The visitors were thrashed 4-0 in Gelsenkirchen, with around 600 Cottbus supporters having seen their side turn in a dismal display.

General manager Steffen Heidrich confirmed: "When you are in a relegation battle, you can only survive when you accept the challenge and we completely avoided this.

"Therefore, I welcome the team's gesture to their fans, but the real compensation must follow in the coming games.

"Of course you can lose at Schalke, but we certainly provided too little resistance to the undoubted class of our opponents."
