Montrose 1-0 Elgin: Report

02 April 2011 18:39
Crawford strike enough for Montrose Montrose picked up a valuable three points with a 1-0 victory over Elgin. Daryl Nicol came close in the third minute but his 12-yard effort cleared the crossbar. Nicol then set up John Crawford in the 12th minute with a left-wing cross and the midfielder found the bottom corner with a neat header from close range to give Montrose the lead. Elgin goalkeeper John Calder could not hold onto Martin Boyle's shot from outside the area, but the lively Nicol shot wide on the rebound. Steven Edwards' poor tackle just before the break sparked a fracas that resulted in three players being booked. Despite trailing, Elgin only mustered two shots in the second half, including a speculative 30-yard effort from Edwards. Calder was forced to make a succession of late saves as Montrose pushed for a second goal, and twice denied Sean Tierce in stoppage time.
