Frankfurt back ailing Funkel

Rock-bottom Eintracht Frankfurt insist they have no intention of axing under-fire coach Friedhelm Funkel.

Frankfurt have failed to win any of their seven Bundesliga games so far this season and fans called for Funkel's head during the latest loss - a 2-0 home capitulation to Bayer Leverkusen.

However, club president Heribert Bruchhagen has backed the 54-year-old, who has been in charge at Commerzbank-Arena since 2004 and is the Bundesliga's second longest-serving coach behind Werder Bremen's Thomas Schaaf.

Bruchhagen claimed: "The 'Funkel-out' calls are born of frustration. That does not mean that we have to act. We are working together with trust and we are not setting any ultimatum."

Meanwhile, Funkel remains confident he can lift his side up the table, saying: "I feel strong enough to get us out of the mire.

"I am a positive thinking person and am sure we will win our game in hand against Karlsruhe."
