Five-star Pars punish Blue Brazil

Dunfermline claimed a comfortable 5-1 victory over 10-man Cowdenbeath at East End Park in the first round of the Scottish League Cup.

The hosts dominated possession in the first half but were unable to convert any of their chances into goals with Michael Moffat firing wide early on before Andy Geggan's effort went over the crossbar.

Cowdenbeath goalkeeper Michael Andrews also did well to keep out headers from Ben Richards-Everton and Moffat.

But Allan Johnston's Pars did not take long to break the deadlock against their League One rivals as the second half got under way as Faissal El Bakhtaoui fired home Joe Cardle's cut-back in the 49th minute.

Shaun Byrne doubled their lead after 56 minutes as the 22-year-old found the back of the net with a long-range effort while Greig Spence set up Declan Hughes as the away side pulled one back just before the hour mark.

Cowdenbeath stopper Andrews saw red for a foul on Ryan Wallace and the striker made no mistake as he stepped up and powered his penalty past replacement Jamie Sneddon while Byrne's header 12 minutes from time and El Bakhtaoui's second in the final minute added further gloss.
