Pars' promotion hopes dashed

Cowdenbeath will remain in the Scottish Championship next season after overcoming Fife derby rivals Dunfermline 4-1 on aggregate.

Kane Hemmings's goal with barely a minute on the clock set the Blue Brazil on their way to a 3-0 victory on the day, following a 1-1 draw in the first leg.

Second-half goals from Thomas O'Brien and Greg Stewart ended the Pars' promotion aspirations and consigned them to another League One campaign.

Dunfermline's hopes were dashed right from the off through Hemmings' neat finish from an O'Brien pass.

Alex Whittle and Danny Grainger looked dangerous for the hosts but Jim Jeffries' side were unable to ask any real questions of goalkeeper Thomas Flynn, despite their possession.

Only a couple of fine saves from Ryan Scully to deny Hemmings and Dean Brett kept the Pars in the game. The Dunfermline goalkeeper repeated his first-half heroics after the break to repel Stewarts' powerful strike from the edge of the box.

But there was little he could do to prevent O'Brien firing home after 67 minutes and 10 minutes later the result was put beyond doubt when Stewart collected a pin-point long ball and cut inside before moving into the box and slotting past a helpless Scully.
