Dundee United have named the former Hearts and Leicester City manager Craig Levein as Craig Brewster's successor at Tannadice.
Levein has signed a contract that will keep him with the Terrors until the end of the 2008-09 season following Brewster's exit on Sunday.
Brewster left United, currently bottom of the SPL table, "by mutual and amicable agreement" following Saturday's 5-1 thrashing at Falkirk.
Levein replaced Gordon Dalziel as Raith Rovers boss last month but has been working on a non-contract basis at Stark's Park.
A brief statement on Raith's official website read: "We regret to announce that Craig Levein has resigned as manager with immediate effect to take up a new challenge.
"Craig leaves with our thanks for his efforts during his eight weeks in charge at Stark's Park, and with our best wishes for the future.
"The board of directors will meet this evening to discuss this development and further announcements will follow."
