Craig Levein was downcast after seeing his Dundee United side concede a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw at home to St Mirren.
Sean Dillon's strike looked like being enough to secure victory, only for Buddies midfielder Andy Dorman to net three minutes from time at Tannadice.
Levein told The Courier: "We completely dominated the game, but just couldn't convert the chances we had.
"I find it very hard to be critical. If anybody has been watching our recent matches they'll know it's been just one of those things.
"In the first half we played too many long balls and not enough football, but in the second we were much better.
"It feels like a punch to the solar plexus, but the good thing is we're not losing any ground as we attempt to finish in the top six. We're on 42 points now and the games are running out.
"I'd like to get over the finishing line, but I'd also like the players to get the points their play has deserved."
