Well boss impressed with Gow

Manager Craig Brown praised Alan Gow after the striker's first goal for Motherwell sent them into the Co-operative Insurance Cup semi-finals.[LNB] Gow turned and fired home from close range after an 86th-minute corner to hand Motherwell a 1-0 victory over Dundee United at Fir Park on Tuesday night.[LNB]The former Rangers and Falkirk forward signed for the club at the start of September after training on his own all summer and Brown is delighted to see him get up to speed.[LNB]Brown said: "He got us there with a good snapshot. I'm pleased for him because he was palpably unfit when he first came here. [LNB]"He has worked hard in training to get a level of fitness which enables us to play him. He can be sharper still but he needs games. It's only his third game from the start.[LNB]"Once Alan Gow gets a bit more sharpness, we'll have a good player."[LNB]Gow's contract runs out on January 15 and Brown hopes a semi-final two weeks later will enable him to keep the forward on a longer-term basis.[LNB]"If his request is normal and reasonable, we hope we'll be able to sign him," the former Scotland boss said.[LNB]"I think he likes it here and is comfortable. But he's in the shop window.[LNB]"At the end of his contract in January he might get offers from elsewhere. If Arsenal come in or Manchester City, we could struggle."[LNB]The defeat was United's second at Fir Park in four days following their 2-1 defeat in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League on Saturday, but Peter Houston was happier with his team's display.[LNB]"I don't think Motherwell deserved to win tonight," Houston said. "I was the first to say they deserved to win on Saturday.[LNB]"I thought it was certain to go to extra-time. We played a lot better than on Saturday and it's frustrating."[LNB]Willie Collum took charge of the game amid the furore over his penalty award for Rangers during his Old Firm debut, and United players were unhappy with some of his decisions tonight.[LNB]United almost scrambled a last-minute equaliser following a long throw, and Scott Robertson appealed for a penalty in the 13th minute when Steve Jennings challenged him as he was about to shoot.[LNB]"Our boys were saying the (Danny) Cadamarteri one was over the line, I thought it was in," Houston said.[LNB]"One or two of the boys are saying we were denied a stonewall penalty in the first half. But they would say that, I haven't seen it."
