40th League cup anniversary
celebration 1973 HAMPDEN HEROES DINNER
In our 120th Anniversary Season, Dundee Football Club are delighted to announce an event to commemorate the 40th Anniversary of the League Cup victory over Celtic in 1973.
The dinner will take place exactly 40 years to the day - December 15th - in The Invercarse Hotel, Dundee. 1973 brought Dundee's last major trophy when captain Tommy Gemmell lifted the League Cup after Gordon Wallace's winner had beaten Celtic 1-0 at Hampden. Both would later go on to manage the Club. Chesting down a Bobby Wilson free-kick with his back to the goal, almost all in the one movement 'Stubby' turned before firing the ball past the desperately diving Ally Hunter for one of the best goals ever seen in a Hampden Cup Final. "As the years go by, we recognise more and more how important it is to mark these events and ensure these Legends of this historic Club are given the proper recognition they deserve. These players play an important role in our Football Club, linking what we've achieved and what we want to aspire to" said Chief Executive Scot Gardiner. "There will be plenty of supporters who can remember that team, or indeed travelled through to Hampden that day to witness David White's men lift the trophy. This will be a warm, thoroughly enjoyable night where we'll have the wonderful opportunity of hearing first hand from the players who played that day their memories of bringing a major trophy back to Dens Park" "We will have the vast majority - if not all - of the members of the squad in attendance that evening along with a few very special guests (yet to be announced). I have been asked numerous times over the past few months what we had planned to mark this momentous feat, and I'm delighted that we're now in a position to announce the details for what we're sure will be a very popular and sought after event". Guest Speaker for the evening will be Dundee-born former Leeds United and Scotland star Peter Lorimer. Known for having the hardest shot in football, Peter was no stranger to silverware himself during his playing days, having won 2 English First Division Leagues Titles, 2 European Inter-Cities Faires Cups, an FA Cup, and English League Cup as well as appearing in the 1974 World Cup Finals in Germany - where he scored in the group game Vs Zaire - and a European Cup Final. He remains Leeds United's all time top goalscorer with 238 goals in 678 appearances for the Yorkshire club. Being close to the Festive Season- therefore ideal for Christmas nights out with family, colleague or friends - Dundee Football Club expect this event to sell fast and would subsequently ask all interested parties to reserve their place as soon as possible. Tickets for this event will go on sale from The Commercial Department at 9am on Monday 2nd September. Price is £40 per person, which includes a commemorative programme and a 3 course meal. Affiliated supporters clubs of the DFCSS can book at table of ten guests for the special price of just £350.
