Thomson hoping for more Boyd goals

Boyd scored five goals in a 7-1 thrashing of United back in December, a haul that saw him overtake Henrik Larsson as the SPL's most prolific goalscorer.[LNB]The striker is now battling to find the form he was enjoying before undergoing a double hernia operation and has not found the back of the net in his last three outings for Gers.[LNB]But, as far as Thomson is concerned, the visit of the Tannadice men is the ideal time for him to hit the goal trail again.[LNB]He said: "We had a purple patch over the Christmas period and it was all about Boydy.[LNB]"No matter what he hit, it went into the back of the net.[LNB]"Hopefully we can get him back to that form pretty soon. Another result like that would delight us all."[LNB]Thomson concedes United are now a different prospect to the team they faced last time around.[LNB]He added: "It will be a tough test. Dundee United have come through a sticky patch and they're starting to play well again.[LNB]"It's going to be a tough one for us. They have picked up and they have boys who are scoring goals at the moment."[LNB]Rangers needed two attempts to overcome both Hamilton and St Mirren in earlier rounds of the competition and Thomson hopes Sunday's clash will be more straightforward for the holders.[LNB]"We are certainly making it hard for ourselves but we're hopeful it won't go to a replay on Sunday," the midfielder told Blues News.[LNB]"I don't think either team would really want a replay so I'm pretty sure it will be an open game.[LNB]"With the cup-tie atmosphere at Ibrox, we're really looking forward to it and fingers crossed we get a positive result."[LNB]Meanwhile, United boss Peter Houston believes by bringing success to Rangers with and without money Walter Smith has proved he is the greatest manager of his generation.[LNB]"Walter is definitely up there with the best - if not the best," he said.[LNB]"Martin O'Neill came up and did a great job but we are talking about a Scotsman who worked wonders with Rangers when he had money and now when they haven't had a lot of money.[LNB]"That tells you how good he is at his job and he also did a great job during his own time here at Dundee United.[LNB]"In my opinion, he could easily be up there as number one.[LNB]"Sir Alex Ferguson left when I was still a First Division player, so I don't know too much about his management style.[LNB]"I wouldn't say Walter is a better manager than Sir Alex. Thirty two trophies at Manchester United isn't bad![LNB]"But I know Walter through my coaching career and he handles himself well on and off the park and he also has a real desire to win things. I admire him so much."[LNB]He added: "People have criticised their style of play but look at how many goals they have scored and how many points in the league.[LNB]"I think it's absolute rubbish when people say they are not good to watch - they score loads of goals and that's what people want to see."[LNB][LNB] Rangers v Dundee Utd To Score in 90mins: Boyd, K. 8/11
