Hughes absolves 'warrior' Scobbie

Scobbie handled Paul Dixon's deep cross amid little danger to allow Craig Conway to net the only goal of Tuesday's Scottish Premier League contest from the penalty spot in the 27th minute. The result left Falkirk just two points above bottom club Inverness. Hughes said: "I feel for Thomas. He's had a right hard season in terms of injury. "But I know what that kid is all about, he is one you can hang your hat on. I'm not going to point the finger of blame. "Tam's a warrior. He is right up there in the top half-dozen boys in this club. "He plays with a great maturity and it's just one of those things. He tried to head it and it's caught the back of his hand." However, Hughes was angry with his side's first-half display. "We never got to their full-backs quick enough and we looked a bit leggy," he added. "The second half was a bit better but not great. It was more hope that something would fall for us. "The effort was good enough but I would have liked it to be a little more slick." Dundee United manager Craig Levein was relieved his side had got back to winning ways. Their second victory in the SPL this year moved them two points behind third-placed Hearts, who host in-form Motherwell on Wednesday night. Levein said: "We haven't been on a great run with regards to picking up points recently. So first and foremost it was vital we picked up the points. "I thought we deserved to win. There wasn't a hell of a lot between the teams but we had the better chances. "If we had been more clinical we could have made it easier for ourselves." Levein was full of praise for the recalled Conway, who played on both flanks in a 4-5-1 formation. The winger also forced a good save from Dani Mallo and created several chances. "He was more like himself," Levein said. "On his day he is unplayable. "The system suited him tonight, he doesn't have as many defensive responsibilities as when you're playing a 4-4-2."
