Peter Houston has been offered the Dundee United manager's job on a permanent basis, Press Association Sport understands.

The Clydesdale Bank Premier League club hope to confirm the 51-year-old's appointment early next week following talks between his representative and chairman Stephen Thompson.

Saturday saw Houston lead United to the Active Nation Scottish Cup, their first success in the competition for 16 years.

It was also only the fifth major trophy the club have won in their 100-year history.

Houston was placed in charge until the end of the season following Craig Levein's departure for the Scotland job.
