Dundee United manager Peter Houston has backed the club's planned summer cutbacks.
Tannadice chairman Stephen Thompson announced on Wednesday that he plans to slash the playing budget for next season in a bid to balance the books. United have a shortfall of around £500,000 to make up this season, with Thompson hoping money from a high Clydesdale Bank Premier League finish and a good run in the Scottish Cup will again plug the gap.
"The cuts have to be made," said Houston. "It is more important that Dundee United is here for the long term. We don't want to get into some of the same problems other clubs have had and suffer financial difficulties."
He added: "I have spoken to the chairman but we don't have exact figures at the moment.
"Circumstances change because, if we have another good cup run and do well in the league again, then the money aspect could be a bit different.
"Every club in Scotland has these problems at the moment and football is not immune to the economic problems everyone is suffering.
"We have lost big television deals so there is not the same money in the game.
"What I have to do, along with the chairman and the board of directors, is manage it properly and keep a good team on the park.
"We have a lot to play for this season, we're not too far off third and will have the cup to look forward to.
"So we'll see what happens between now and May, then we have a clearer idea of what we'll be working with."
