Daly: Dundee United failed to capitalise

Dundee United striker Jon Daly believes he and his team-mates had AEK Athens in a panic towards the end of their Europa League tie on Thursday night.

The Tangerines ended the second leg pushing for a crucial away goal after Daly's 78th-minute strike had cancelled out Papa Bouba Diop's first-half opener. With the aggregate score sitting at 2-1, United bombed forward and had a great chance to get a crucial away goal through Danny Swanson but he put the ball past the post and United crashed out.

Daly said: "We gave ourselves a really good chance of going through towards the end. After we scored they sat back and we were going at them. Maybe if we'd got the goal a bit earlier we would have had a better chance."

He added: "They were panicking towards the end and we just didn't get that bounce of the ball in and around the box we needed.

"I think we did ourselves proud after the last two results.

"We have a massive game against Hearts on Sunday now and we'll look forward to that."

With no home fans in the Karaiskaki Stadium - home of AEK's deadly rivals Olympiakos - due to security fears, the atmosphere was eerie and Daly admits he was disappointed it wasn't the intense evening they expected when the draw was made.

He continued: "We were a bit disappointed the Greek fans were not there because it would have been a good experience.

"It was strange playing in front of a near-empty stadium but our supporters made a lot of noise.

"But the preparation for the game didn't change."
