Dundee United won the first bonus point of the new-look Betfred Cup group stages as they beat Arbroath on penalties at Gayfield.

Cammy Bell made a crucial stop to earn United a 5-3 triumph in the shoot-out following a 1-1 draw in Ray McKinnon's debut as Tannadice manager.

United earned two points from the encounter with Arbroath having to settle for one.

Arbroath started well and Bell, one of four United debutants, made a good stop from Steven Doris.

Arbroath's 17-year-old goalkeeper, Robbie Mutch, soon impressed with good stops from the dangerous Tope Obadeyi and Lewis Toshney, and Simon Murray could not make the most of a series of chances before he struck the foot of a post from 22 yards.

Substitute Henri Anier put United ahead in the 84th minute when he slotted just inside the post, but Colin Hamilton forced the ball over the line from close range to level in injury-time and force penalties.

Prospective Raith Rovers signing Rudi Skacel watched his potential team-mates come from behind to beat Cove Rangers 2-1 at Forfar's Station Park.

Ryan Stott put the Highland League champions ahead from close range just after the half-hour mark, but Kyle Benedictus headed an equaliser four minutes later.

Lewis Vaughan won it for Rovers when he shot in off the bar in the 56th minute but Cove fought all the way.
