Rovers midfielder Mark Wilson seeking new challengers

Doncaster Rovers star Mark Wilson has no regrets about committing himself to the club for another two years. "The only reason I probably would have left would be to be guaranteed regular first-team football," said the 31 year-old."But that wouldn't be as much of a challenge as testing myself against the likes of John Oster, Brian Stock and Martin Woods and it doesn't get much tougher than that at this level."And they are the sort of challenges that I need if I'm going to improve as a player, which is what I am looking to do."He added: "The gaffer encouraged me to speak to a few other clubs because it would help me make up my mind and it certainly did."There were several other clubs who were interested and I spoke to a few, but it just wasn't right."I was linked with Scunthorpe and I had previously spoken to manager Nigel Adkins, but there was nothing concrete."Taking everything into consideration I came to the conclusion for me to continue to improve I am in the right place."Although the gaffer encouraged me to talk to other clubs before signing a new deal, he also made it clear that he wanted me to stay and he said some flattering things about me."It was nice to know that a manager, who I hold in high regard, had spoken well of me; it is great to hear those things."He has been the biggest single influence throughout my career on the way that I think about the game and how I perform."It is the way that he goes about things. He gives a player the tools and almost a thought process to adapt and realise your strengths and become a more consistent player."A large portion of my early career I was inconsistent. "I had the ability and that is who I played for (Manchester United, Middlesbrough) but I never kept it up long enough to stay where I was."But the gaffer here has given me a lot of food for thought over the last three or four years."Every player in his own head probably thinks that he is a better player than what he is and that's what gives you confidence."But what gives you the self belief is playing to your strengths."I think self belief and confidence are totally different things."We are all confident and we all walk around the place giving off an air of confidence. "But that inside self belief only comes from playing well consistently
