O'Driscoll: We got lucky in cup

A 54th-minute strike by James Coppinger earned Rovers a 1-0 win, but County struck the woodwork on three occasions in the first half. O'Driscoll said: "To say that we were extremely fortunate is a massive understatement but I was pleased at the way we stuck at it. "County could have been 4-0 up at half-time but at the finish we could have ended up winning 4-0. "Sometimes in football 15 minutes can hurt and harm you but we managed to convey the message at half-time and it enabled us to get organised. "The players all knew they could do a lot better and I thought they were excellent in the second period." Rovers, who made a first-round exit at Meadow Lane in the Carling Cup last season, must have feared they were in for a repeat as County dominated the opening exchanges. They demolished Bradford City 5-0 in a one-sided League Two contest on Saturday and time after time they tore Doncaster to shreds at the back. Twice in the space of a minute they should have scored as Karl Hawley shot over from three yards and Luke Rodgers hit the bar from six yards when he should have scored. And twice in quick succession Jamie Clapham saw efforts come back off the woodwork. The former Ipswich star saw his free-kick from the edge of the area rebound off the underside of the bar and then, cutting in from the left, drilled an angled shot against the inside of an upright. County were left to rue their luck further when Rovers went ahead after 54 minutes with their first strike on target. Lewis Guy fed Coppinger and he beat Russell Hoult with a deliberate shot low to the goalkeeper's right. The goal certainly changed the game as Hoult suddenly became busy, denying Guy on two occasions and also making a diving save from Coppinger. But County twice had decent chances to equalise as substitute Lee Hughes dragged a shot wide when sent clear and then saw his header saved by Ben Smith. County boss Ian McParland said: "We were brilliant in the first half. In fact I thought we were better in that period than we were when we won 5-0 on Saturday. "Rovers did to us what we did to them for a period at the start of the second half but we got back into it and Lee Hughes had two good chances. "On another day he would have put them in the net. "I thought Neal Bishop might have had a penalty at the end and I was a bit disappointed the referee didn't give it."
