Doncaster Rovers' recent signing Paul Keegan has been ruled out for the rest of the season. The midfielder underwent a cartilage operation yesterday. But there was good news on the otherwise improving injury front with both John Oster and Steve Brooker returning to training after calf injuries. Meanwhile, like the majority of his team-mates, who have faced a gruelling schedule in recent weeks, midfielder Simon Gillett has welcomed a week without any midweek games. “It will probably take me a week to get over Saturday’s game at Forest,” joked the former Southampton favourite. “I also probably need to work on one or two things having been out so long.” The game at the City Ground was Gillett’s first start since the first of his two medial knee ligament injuries in October. But he showed few signs of ring rust, or lack of fitness, and played his part in the goalless draw. “I’d been on the bench as for the previous two or three games. I had wanted to get involved as soon as possible; that is just how I am,” he said. “But the gaffer eased me in and gave me a few minutes on the pitch and fortunately for me, put me in the team on Saturday. “I wanted to take the opportunity with both hands - I’ve really missed playing.” Reflecting on Saturday’s game, Gillett said: “Some people might have taken a draw before the game, but I’m the sort of person who wants to try and win every game. But looking back it was probably a fair result. They had a lot of the ball in the first half but didn’t create many chances; we defended really well because they had a lot of attacking options and we knew it was going to be a tough game. “It was good for the defence to keep a clean sheet and will have given them a bit of confidence ahead of Saturday’s home game against leaders QPR
