Goalkeeper a priority for Rovers

Paul Dickov is aiming high in his attempts to fill Rovers' goalkeeping vacancy.

Former Sheffield Wednesday stopper Nicky Weaver - a former teammate of Dickov’s - is among a handful of targets earmarked as a possible replacement for Gary Woods.

However, Weaver is not thought to be at the top of Doncaster’s wanted list and Dickov is understood to be setting the bar high in an ambitious attempt to land a proven, international goalkeeper

Weaver came close to joining Rovers on loan last season but an injury setback is thought to have scuppered the deal.

The 34-year-old is a free agent after being released by Wednesday this summer and would almost certainly jump at the chance of another season in the Championship. However, Dickov will be wary of Weaver’s problematic injury record. He is thought to have shortlisted at least two international keepers as he sets his sights on a top quality replacement for Woods.

Rovers’ boss recently stated that the goalkeeping vacancy is a priority because he “only has one keeper”, hinting that a renewed contract has been agreed with either Neil Sullivan or Jon Maxted.

Weaver, meanwhile, has vowed not to hang up his gloves up just yet.

He said: “Thirty-four isn’t old for a goalkeeper when you look at people like Mark Schwarzer and David James.

“I obviously want to be a No 1, but you don’t know what opportunities can arise.”
