Wellens leaves it late

Richie Wellens snatched a last-gasp winner to give Doncaster a deserved 2-1 home victory over Crewe after a dominant second-half display.

Rovers staged a storming fightback after Crewe had grabbed an eighth-minute lead through centr-back George Ray in a closely-contested first half.

Ray fired home at the far post following a corner after home keeper Stephen Bywater had done well to parry a near-post header from Alan Tate.

Rovers battled hard for an equaliser with Kyle Bennett twice going close after Jamie McCombe had seen a shot on the turn saved.

But the home team had Bywater's reflexes to thank for keeping them in the game when he twice saved from Nicky Ajose in quick succession before blocking a point-blank effort from Marcus Haber.

It was one-way traffic in the second half with Crewe failing to trouble Bywater again and the pressure paid off when Dean Furman fired home from close range following a free-kick from Bennett.

It looked as if Crewe might hang on for a point until Wellens picked the ball up on the edge of the box to hit a tremendous 20-yarder from an angle into the top corner to give Doncaster their third successive victory.
