Doncaster 0-0 Swansea

29 September 2009 08:39
Doncaster held out against a wasteful Swansea City who recorded their sixth draw of the season.Craig Beattie and Gorka Pintado blew excellent first-half chances and Thomas Butler headed against the crossbar. [LNB]John Spicer and Martin Woods had the home side's best efforts, but Rovers struggled for fluency and creativity. [LNB]Woods forced Dorus De Vries into a save from a free-kick after Ashley Williams' hand ball, and Stephen Dobbie blazed over from distance in a poor second 45. [LNB]Swansea have failed to score in six of their 10 league games this season and are the division's lowest scorers, with only five goals. [LNB]A draw was perhaps predictable, as Doncaster are now without a win in five games and have drawn seven of their 10 Championship matches. [LNB]Rovers were without suspended midfielders John Oster and Quinton Fortune, while Swansea are in the midst of a dreadful injury crisis, capped by star midfielder Ferrie Bodde being ruled out for the season. [LNB]But the visitors made a bright start and created the first clear-cut chance as Beattie headed over when winger Mark Gower's corner found him unmarked at the near post. [LNB]Rovers replied with a surging attack that saw Angel Rangel earn a booking for bringing down Woods, who forced a superb save from De Vries from the resulting free-kick. [LNB]Shiels dragged a long-range effort wide of the left-hand post in a lively opening 10 minutes, before the Swans wasted three gilt-edged chances. [LNB]Butler's superb cross was missed altogether by Pintado with the goal at his mercy, and moments later the Spanish forward's excellent run and pull-back saw Beattie shoot straight at Neil Sullivan in the Doncaster goal. [LNB]The treble of misses was completed when Butler headed against the underside of the bar from another Gower corner. [LNB]Shiels saw his volley deflected over the bar by Rangel as Sean O'Driscoll's side rallied, but the visitors continued to look the more incisive of the two teams. [LNB]The lively Spicer almost made Paolo Sousa's men pay for their missed chances as he slalomed past three defenders from the restart to place a shot just wide of De Vries' right-hand post. [LNB]But that was to be as close as the hosts got to a goal as they struggled to break down Swansea with countless passes going astray in the final third. [LNB]Gower's low free-kick into the area somehow evaded everyone while Mark Wilson fired wide for Doncaster as the game became increasingly scrappy, a result and performance that will have done little to cheer either manager. [LNB][LNB]Doncaster manager Sean O'Driscoll:"[Swansea] are better than us in a lot of aspects, but I thought we kept going and that was probably a point won rather than two points lost. [LNB]"We have conceded goals where someone has made a mistake but the chances they created were down to good football and passing and movement. [LNB]"Every time we play Swansea they set the standard. We've had to sell a couple of players and we had a couple of guys out through injury so we have not got that fluidity that they have got. I'd watch them every week if I could. [LNB]"James [Coppinger] trained on Monday and his calf reacted this morning while [Jason] Shackell trained [Tuesday] morning. [LNB]"With Jason we're not quite sure what the injury is but if there is no recurrence and he feels fine he should be fit [for Saturday], as should James." [LNB]Swansea manager Paulo Sousa:"There is a big frustration, not just for me but for all the players. [LNB]"I am very proud of the work the lads put in. In the first half we got our strategy right and we had a minimum of four clear opportunities to score. [LNB]"Games like this, and the recent game at Barnsley, have to be won as games like this can put us in a completely different position in the table. [LNB]"It is not only about Gorka Pintado, the most important thing for me is to see a minimum of three or four players in the box attacking the areas we need to attack. [LNB]"I don't just want strikers to score, I want wingers, midfielder and defenders to score too. [LNB]"I am happy with what happened but I am frustrated because we deserved two more points and we didn't get them."
