Surgery scare for Jay

Derby County defender Jay McEveley has revealed how the operation on his fractured cheekbone last month almost cost him his life.

The Scotland international was undergoing a routine procedure but doctors feared the worst when his heart stopped during the operation, as the 24-year-old revealed to BBC Radio Derby.

"My heart decided to stop," he said. "I don't know whether it was a reaction to the anaesthetic. I've had five operations and nothing like that has ever happened before. I'm just glad to be here.

"I was thinking 'what's going to happen here? Am I ever going to play again? Is there something wrong with my heart?' Everything was running through my mind.

"Thankfully, they've done a scan on my heart and everything's come back clear. They've said it will not affect my football, so I can look forward and put it all behind me."
