Veteran Derby County defender Alan Stubbs can understand why Paul Jewell slammed the Rams players after Saturday's dismal 2-0 defeat at Wigan Athletic.
The former Celtic and Everton stalwart was one player who escaped Jewell's wrath after the JJB Stadium debacle, but accepted it had been a woeful overall performance by the team.
"You can see why the boss is angry," Stubbs said.
"As a manager you ask for 100 per cent first and foremost and, after that, a bit of quality, but I think he's had to question some of the players' commitment.
"A few home truths came out and players have to take those on the chin, even if they don't like it.
"The players have to give the manager a response because that's what he wants. As professionals we have to look at ourselves and question what we're doing when we cross that line.
"It's not easy being down there but that was a game which we could have won. The pitch was awful but it was the same for both sides and they adapted better.
"I know the manager has said it's going to be an uncomfortable week for us but to be honest it's going to be an uncomfortable 11 weeks.
"The players at this football club are playing for their futures and we have to stand up and realise that."
