Record low haunts Rams - Clough

The Rams were relegated from the Premier League with an all-time low points total of 11 after winning just one match during the 2007/08 campaign. Clough famously followed in his late father Brian's footsteps by becoming Derby manager at the start of this year. He inherited the squad that had performed so poorly under predecessor Paul Jewell and was quick to point out that he felt the players were still hungover from the previous season. After saving the Rams from successive relegations, the former Burton boss has rebuilt over the summer by bringing in five new signings. However, with Derby set to begin their Championship campaign at home to newly-promoted Peterborough on Saturday, Clough admits that memories of the torment of the 2007/08 season remain. "It's not gone 100%. It still lapses back in every now and again when things go badly," he said. "Generally, we are getting shot of it. It's not a conscious thing, it just seems to creep in over a period of months and then it lingers for quite some time. "It's not like a light switch where you can just turn it off one day, it takes a period of time. "I thought we showed signs of it going last season and I hope we start this season and show even more signs of it." Clough hopes his five new signings will help to change the mentality of the squad. He added: "There are a lot of new lads here now but they can get dragged into it, I think that happened last season. "But they have to be strong enough to say that they were not part of it because a few of them have come from winning mentalities."
