Stoke City midfielder Michael Tonge has joined Derby County on loan for the rest of the season.

Tonge, 28, had been deemed surplus to requirements at the Premier League club and spent time on loan in the Championship at Preston North End earlier in the season.

"Michael is a player with a proven pedigree and will give us added quality in the ranks," Rams boss Nigel Clough told the club's official website.

"He loves to get on the ball and make things happen. He is also vastly experienced at this level and above.

"We saw him play for Preston earlier in the season when he was on loan there and he impressed us.

"He is with us until the end of the season and has made it clear he will fight for a place in our first team and do everything he can to help us achieve a healthy position in the Championship."
