Derby County have strengthened their attacking hand by landing Jon Macken on a free transfer from Crystal Palace.

The 29-year-old had seen his career stall at Palace after injury restricted the former Manchester City hitman to just 14 starts in almost two seasons at Selhurst Park.

Macken made his name at Preston North End where he bagged 74 goals in 188 starts before sealing a £5million move to City in 2002.

But the one-time Republic of Ireland international struggled to hold down a first-team berth at the Premiership side and moved on to Palace on a free transfer 18 months ago.

The former Manchester United trainee spent four months on loan at Ipswich Town earlier this season, where he scored three times.
