Derby County manager Billy Davies has failed to persuade United States international Eddie Johnson to join the Rams.
The 23-year-old Kansas City Wizards star is the top scorer in Major League Soccer this season, but appears to be close to penning a new deal with the club.
Johnson admitted: "I did what my heart felt. The money wasn't a problem. The money was great.
"But I'm a big believer that, when my confidence is high, and I'm confident in what I'm doing, good things are yet to happen for me.
"I know if I keep doing what I'm doing, there are going to be other opportunities for me, and some are going to come up that I can't pass up."
Johnson has already found the net 12 times in only 11 games for Kansas City this season.
Meanwhile, Davies is keen to extend trialist Dusan Svento's stay at Pride Park.
The Slovakia international impressed during the pre-season clash against Macclesfield Town, and Davies said: "It's difficult for the players to come in but they showed one or two flashes, particularly the lad Svento with his pace and ability in the outside left position.
"We'll have a chat to his representatives and see what the next step is."
