Rams fail with Jones bid
07 Aug 2007 - 10:52:12
Derby County have failed with a new bid, believed to be in the region of £5million, for Southampton striker Kenwyne Jones.
The Saints rejected an offer from the Premier League newcomers for Jones last week and claimed County had broken League rules in their approach for the player.
A statement on the Championship side's official website read: "A further unsolicited and unwelcome approach from Derby County for Kenwyne Jones has been rejected.
"George Burley sees Kenwyne playing a major role in Saints' push for promotion this season.
"Moreover, it is considered that Derby County's latest offer to pay a total of £5million for the player very substantially under-values his ability and potential as a Premiership-quality striker in-the-making.
"The club hopes that its rejection of Derby's latest offer will now bring this matter to a close."
The 22-year-old Trinidad & Tobago international has scored 21 goals in 50 starts and 29 substitute appearances for the Saints, as well as enjoying successful loan spells with Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke City.
