Derby County manager Paul Jewell has been linked with a swoop for Stockport County striker Liam Dickinson.
The 22-year-old former Blackburn Rovers trainee has found the net 35 times in 107 games for the Hatters and scored in last month's League Two play-off final success against Rochdale.
Meanwhile, the Rams have hit back at claims that they have tried to unsettle Sheffield United striker Rob Hulse.
Jewell had been linked with a summer swoop for the former Crewe Alexandra forward, only for discussions between the Blades and Derby to break down last week.
A source at Bramall Lane had been quoted as saying the club felt they had been the victims of a "deliberate campaign to unsettle a player".
However, Jewell hit back by saying: "I hear that sources at Sheffield United are telling their local press that there have been no discussions between the two clubs about Rob Hulse.
"Well those sources must be ill-informed or completely out of the loop. I've personally discussed the matter with the manager Kevin Blackwell and their chairman Terry Robinson.
"We couldn't come to an agreement on a fee and the deal, as far as I'm concerned, is now dead."
