Derby County look set to be without Bob Malcolm for the next three months after the utility man was forced to undergo knee surgery.
The former Rangers star missed the Rams' last three games after experiencing pain in his knee and had an arthroscopy on Tuesday in an attempt to remove a piece of floating bone.
The keyhole procedure proved unsuccessful and he had to have an operation to clean out the joint.
County boss Billy Davies told the Evening Telegraph: "The news is a blow for the player and he is bitterly disappointed.
"It is also a blow for the squad but these things happen in football and you have to battle on."
