Derby County boss Paul Jewell thought his side deserved to take a point from Sunday's clash at Everton.
Leon Osman's second-half goal proved to be the only difference between the two sides as the Rams produced one of their best displays of their woeful season.
"I can't fault my side for endeavour and they're starting to show more thought and craft, but it's what we do in the final third that really makes the difference - that's where we need to improve," Jewell told County's official website.
"But today was encouraging. We played well enough against a team fifth in the Premier League and with multi-million pound players to keep their crowd quiet.
"I was disappointed with their goal, but Hossam Ghaly had another terrific game, and I think we deserved at least a point.
"But the most important thing is making sure we're ready for action next season."
Mile Sterjovski picked up an Achilles problem at Goodison Park with Jewell adding: "It occurred in the first half and Mile tried to run it off, but finally had to concede defeat."
