Jewell resigned to drop

Derby County manager Paul Jewell admitted it was a case of deja-vu as his side crashed to their 18th defeat in 23 Premier League games this season - 3-1 at Portsmouth.

Lewin Nyatanga had given the Rams an early lead but the visitors showed all their defensive fragility as they allowed Benjani to complete an impressive hat-trick.

"We started very well and could have gone two goals up, but some of the defending from us beggars belief," said the former Bradford City and Wigan Athletic manager.

"I keep on saying the same things over and over again and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that's why we are where we are.

"I don't know what happens to some people when they get out there. It's going to be difficult, I'm not going to say that we're going to stay up.

"Hopefully the FA Cup can give us a ray of light. It's a tough time but the fans were terrific again today.

"I love the job and I'm determined to bring some success to the people who keep coming to watch us. But our problem was that we defended too deep and let too many crosses come into the box."
