Jewell fears Barnes verdict

Derby County have confirmed that young forward Giles Barnes will miss the rest of the season due to a serious-looking knee injury.

The 19-year-old suffered the injury in training last week and the Rams are waiting on a second opinion over the results of a scan, with manager Paul Jewell already planning ahead without Barnes.

He told the Evening Telegraph: "We'll go for a second opinion before we decide on the next course of action, it is not unusual to get a second opinion.

"We are hoping with the rehabilitation he will be back sooner rather than later, but it definitely will not be before the end of the season.

"This season has been a disaster as far as staying up is concerned and it would make no sense to rush him back."

Teenager Barnes, who has been linked with a number of other Premier League clubs, has scored twice in 24 appearances for Derby this season.

In total he has netted 11 times in 90 outings for the Rams, helping the club win promotion to the top-flight via the play-offs last season.
