Derby County manager Paul Jewell is being linked with a summer swoop for Everton midfielder Lee Carsley but has ruled out a move for Blackburn striker Jason Roberts.
Carsley started his career with the Rams and is believed to be heading out of Goodison Park at the end of this season when his contract expires.
Jewell is reported to want the 34-year-old to stiffen his midfield as he attempts to lift County out of the Championship at the first time of asking.
The Derby manager is also believed to want Nottingham Forest midfielder Kris Commons at Pride Park after adding Australian midfielder Ruben Zadkovich to his squad for next season.
However, any move for Roberts, who played under Jewell when the pair were at Wigan Athletic, will not take place.
The Derby boss said: "Jason Roberts did really well for me at Wigan in a terrific partnership with Nathan Ellington but we wouldn't be able to afford him now."
